The woodpecker's first task is to select a suitable tree, one that is sturdy and preferably with a softer, decayed core ideal for drilling. With beak as chisel, it meticulously carves out holes in the trunk, each crafted with remarkable precision. These cavities are not just random burrows; they are carefully measured to fit acorns snugly inside. If the holes are too large, they risk attracting competitors who might steal the precious stash.
