Nicknamed by Native American tribes, particularly the Cheyenne, these soldiers were admired for their fighting skills and bravery in battle. The name "Buffalo Soldiers" referred to their dark, curly hair, which resembled the fur of the buffalo, and their fierce fighting ability, akin to the mighty buffalo. Formed in 1866 after the Civil War, the 10th Cavalry Regiment was the first all-African American regiment in the U.S. Army. These brave soldiers were sent to the western frontier to protect settlers, miners, and stagecoaches from hostile Native American tribes.
