"Einstein's Stolen Brain: A Tale of Curiosity, Controversy, and Unanswered Questions"

By Jude Obuseh

In the realm of bizarre historical tales, few stories could compete with the strange saga of Albert Einstein's brain. It's a narrative that almost sounds like a script from a sci-fi B-movie, but believe it or not, it's an astonishing reality.

Back in the 19th century, it was quite a trend to preserve the brains of genius individuals. The scientific community was eager to unlock the secrets behind their unparalleled intelligence. This peculiar practice can be exemplified by the fact that even half of Charles Babbage's brain, the inventor of the first computing machine, is still on display at London's Royal College of Surgeons' Hunterian Museum.

Albert Einstein, the world-renowned physicist, knew that scientists might express interest in studying his brain after his demise. He explicitly prohibited such endeavors, being aware that they rarely produced valuable insights. However, as history would have it, when Einstein passed away at Princeton Hospital on the early morning of April 18, 1955, a pathologist named Dr. Thomas Harvey took it upon himself to seize the opportunity. Dr. Harvey decided to remove Einstein's brain without official authorization, intending it for future scientific study.

Once in possession of Einstein's brain, Dr. Harvey transported it to his home and embarked on a rather macabre division of the organ. The brain was dissected into a total of 240 pieces and preserved in two mason jars filled with celloidin. It's safe to say that this unauthorized removal did not escape attention, and soon after Einstein's cremation, his son Hans Albert was informed of the pilfered brain. Understandably, Hans Albert was furious, but Dr. Harvey was convincing enough to keep the brain for further research.

However, it's essential to note that these actions had significant repercussions for Dr. Harvey's personal and professional life. He lost his job at Princeton Hospital and subsequently his marriage. Dr. Harvey relocated to the Midwest, where he alternated between positions involving medical practice and running research labs. His peculiar collection of Einstein's brain traveled with him, at one point residing in a cider box beneath a beer cooler. He held onto the brain with the hope of one day unlocking the secrets of Einstein's intelligence.

The fate of Einstein's brain remained largely shrouded in mystery until 1978. It was in this year that a reporter managed to track down Dr. Harvey in Wichita, Kansas. The resulting magazine article brought an influx of requests for brain samples from curious scientists. The year 1985 marked the beginning of various studies publishing their findings, proclaiming that Einstein's brain differed from that of a "normal" individual.

These studies, however, came under scrutiny due to the absence of representative control groups. Even if they were conducted more rigorously, neurology is yet to ascertain whether the physical structures of the brain genuinely influence a person's intelligence. Today, what remains of Einstein's brain is safeguarded at the Penn Medicine Princeton Medical Center in Plainsboro, New Jersey. Intriguingly, access to it is highly restricted, with only a select few having the privilege of viewing it, including researchers.

Intriguingly, pieces of Einstein's brain might still be scattered across America, given Dr. Harvey's propensity for gifting portions of it to inquisitive friends. The tale of Einstein's brain stands as an unusual chapter in the annals of history, blending the brilliance of a scientific genius with the inexplicable actions of a determined pathologist. It serves as a reminder that even the greatest minds can become subjects of intrigue and curiosity long after they have departed this world. 🧠🕵️‍♂️
