Beneath the tranquil waters of the Mediterranean Sea, off the picturesque coast of San Fruttuoso, Italy, a unique and somewhat eerie monument resides—the Christ of the Abyss. This remarkable statue, standing at 8 feet tall, has become a symbol of both remembrance and spirituality in the underwater world.

In 1954, the Italian diver Duilio Marcante was moved to commission this striking likeness of Jesus Christ. His motivation was to create a memorial at the precise location where his dear friend Dario Gonzatti had tragically lost his life while diving a few years earlier. It was in this solemn commemoration that the Christ of the Abyss was born.

The statue, with its outstretched arms and uplifted gaze, exudes an aura that some may find vaguely spooky, especially as time and the elements have left their mark, adorning the figure with algae and corrosion. In 2003, the statue was gently lifted from its aquatic sanctuary for a well-deserved restoration, which included repairing a hand that a rogue anchor had severed.
