Did you know that every time you check the clock or glance at your calendar, you're unwittingly paying homage to an ancient civilization that flourished over 5,000 years ago? It's true – the Sumerians, the earliest known civilization in Mesopotamia, are the ingenious minds behind the timekeeping system that still governs our lives today.

As the Sumerians gazed up at the vast expanse of the heavens, they were captivated by the celestial dance of the stars and planets. In their quest to understand and harness the cyclical movements of the cosmos, they devised a revolutionary system of time measurement based on the number 60.

But why 60, you might ask? Well, for the Sumerian innovators, 60 was the perfect number. It possessed a remarkable versatility, being divisible by a wide range of factors – 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 10, 12, 15, 20, and 30. This inherent divisibility made it ideal for dividing both time and angles, paving the way for the creation of the 60-minute hour and the 24-hour day that we still use today.

Ancient astronomers believed that there were 360 days in a year, a number that conveniently divides into 60 six times.
